History can boring, and we’re more interested in what happens next than what happened before, so we’ll be brief. Out of this World was founded in Adelaide, South Australia, somewhere around 1996. Having worked with some of the bigger multinational ad agencies (Clemenger BBDO, Leo Burnett) Sputnik decided it was time to do his own thing. At the time, he was already a well awarded creative as a copywriter, director and creative director, and made the transition to boutique (ie tiny) independent ‘agency’ with foundation clients Ed Harry (Menswear) and the Art Gallery of South Australia. Over the following years, the company went on to create work for clients across Australia as well as in South East Asia. Today the business works with a select group of clients, both on an ongoing basis as well as on stand alone projects.
During his career Sputnik has worked as a copywriter, creative director, director, strategist and trainer. He’s won numerous creative awards in Australia and abroad. In 2009 he was a finalist in the Telstra Small Business Awards, and in 2010 was awarded the AADC President’s Award for outstanding contribution to the advertising and design industry. He’s written about marketing and advertising for various industry publications, has written several books and was the founder and editor of industry website MADtown. He lived and worked in Phnom Penh, Cambodia for a period of time working with Bates141, Ogilvy Action and Sabay in various roles, and continues to spend time there working with a number of local and international brands.
